10-year-old shot killed in North Highlands
SACRAMENTO, CA – A 10-year-old girl was shot to death and her parents hospitalized after gunmen went to the front door of the girls home and fired shots into the home, this according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department.
The shooting occurred in the 6300 block of Channing Drive in Citrus Heights. The parents were in the house with their daughter and her 14-year-old brother when, at approximately 10:30 p.m., the gunmen came to the door and opened fire, killing 10-year-old Elvira Campos and injuring both parents, after firing at least a dozen rounds into the home.
Elvira’s parents, who are both in their 40s were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
Elvira was watching television in the living room of the home when the attack occurred. The bullets penetrated the outside of the home with visible bullet holes in the front window and door, ultimately hitting her as she was sitting in a love seat facing the television.
According to investigators Elvira has two older brothers, a 14-year-old who was home at the time of the shooting, and a 20-year-old who was not home at the time.
It’ unclear how many shooters were involved. Sacramento homicide detectives and CSI were combing the scene for any evidence.
Sheriff spokesman Jason Ramos stressed this was not a drive-by shooting, but the home was targeted by the gunmen as they walked up to the house and shot inside.
Ramos added that the family has not been forthcoming with information and believe there is more to the story then the family is telling.
Detectives believe the shooting may be gang related and it appears one of the family members has ties to a gang.
In a separate, but possibly related shooting, a gang member was shot multiple times at a nearby location. The 32-year-old victim in that shooting is expected to survive. Official believe the two shootings may be related.
