Update: Search on for man after avalanche in Fair Oaks
FAIR OAKS, CA – UPDATE: The search for a man believe to have been a victim of a landslide and falling into the American River has been called off. Authorities now believe the original reports were false.
Rescue crews are searching for a man who fell into the American River after a section of the cliff he was standing on gave way.
Numerous agencies are working to locate a man who fell into the American River Saturday at around 7:30 p.m. Rescue crews were searching in the area of Sunrise Blvd and Fair Oaks bridge, north of Highway 50.
The man is believed to be buried under a large pile of dirt.
According to Sacramento Metro Fire Department, two separate witnesses say they saw a man fall into the river after a portion of the cliff he was standing on crumbled beneath his feet.
The steep terrain is causing the dirt to continue to crumble even as crews try to dig away the dirt in search of the man.
The avalanche resulted in a pile of dirt over 25 feet wide and about 6 feet deep.
Air units, boats and ground crews were on the scene.
