Bicyclist killed in Carmichael identified
SACRAMENTO, CA – The bicyclist that was struck and killed by a vehicle Thursday night in Carmichael has been identified.
According to the Sacramento Coroner’s website, the man killed Thursday night while riding his bike along El Camino Avenue was 21-year-old Richard Aaron Leeper.
The California Highway Patrol said the driver of the vehicle that struck Leeper was heading east on El Camino Avenue near Laurence Avenue around 8 p.m., when the vehicle hit the cyclist. Leeper was heading in the same direction near the shoulder of the road when the accident occurred.
It was dark at the time of the collision and Leeper was not equipped with any lights, or wearing a helmet.
The driver said they swerved to try and avoid the rider, but didn’t see Leeper until it was too late. The driver crashed into a light pole, but no one was injured in the vehicle.
