Rion Paige is a spirited 13-year-old singer from Florida. It’s a name you will be hearing more and more about as the singing competition ‘X Factor’ continues its search for musical talent.
It was undoubtedly one of the most emotionally charged segments of the show when host Simon Cowell ask the young singer what was special about her.
Piage responded, “I have arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, which is basically a whole bunch of words to describe something simple,” she said enthusiastically.
Arthrogryposis multiplex congenital is a long name for a rare disease that has left her wrist joints deformed and she’s almost completely blind in her right eye.
She explained to producers, “Ever since I was little I would just sort of find a way to get to a microphone. I would put it in between my knees, and try to get it into my foot, and put it in my mouth.”
After the backstory came her breathtaking performance of a Carrie Underwood song, causing all four judges to give her a standing ovation. This seasons judges include Simon Cowell, Demi Lovato, Kelly Rowland and Paulina Rubio.
“Rion, I’m just so impressed with you right now and I cannot believe the struggles you have had and how positive you are,” judge Demi Lovato said exclaimed, “I think everybody in this room can learn something from you today.”
She’s no one hit wonder either – Check out another clip of her performing an Adele song for a local Florida television station.
From the beginning, the X Factor has been on shaky ground with lower than expected ratings throughout the first season. This resulted in what some now refer to as, ‘The X Factor’ Monday Massacre, when judges Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger, and host Steve Jones were fired.
I do believe Scherzinger wasn’t cutting the mustard, and Mr. Personality himself, Steve Jones, was a jerk. Jones has got to go down as the worst host ever. He had lousy timing, talked over the judges on a regular basis, and asked the most ridiculous questions. Probably the worst question he asked of a losing contestant, “Your dream is dead. What will you do now?” ““ Brilliant!
Cowell, being a master of keeping his name in the news, has been rumored to have been in negotiations with a number of celebrities including Janet Jackson and the late Whitney Houston. As I’m sure Cowell has hoped, this has caused a fervor around the show, which may ultimately provide the ratings boost it needs.
Now it’s rumored that Cowell’s close to signing pop-star-gone-wild Britney Spears as one of the new judges. While Britney has calmed down and isn’t in the headlines like she used to be, I think Cowell is banking on her eccentric side to come out on the show.
As we all wait in anticipation to see who the new judges will be, we can sit back and enjoy The Voice and American Idol.
In the end, I don’t think America is going to vote for X Factor and I’d rather listen to Iron Maidens album X Factor anyway.
UPDATE: Houston was found dead Saturday by her bodyguard at approximately 3:48 p.m. on February 11 on the fourth floor of the Beverly Hills hotel where only hours later she was to attend a pre-Grammy bash hosted by her longtime mentor, Clive Davis.
Houston reigned as pop music queen up until her erratic behavior, professed drug abuse, and troubled marriage to singer Bobby Brown, brought her career to a halt. The drugs ravaged her voice and she could no longer carry the high notes as she did in her earlier years.
Houston also starred in several movies including “Body Guard,” which spawned one of her greatest hits “I Will Always Love You,” written by Dolly Parton.
Just recently it was rumored that Simon Cowell had approached Houston to be a judge on the X-Factors, after letting go Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger.
UPDATE: Simon Cowell has confirmed that he was considering Houston for one of the vacated judges positions on X-Factor.
In the past few days Houston was in Southern California to perform at Kelly Price & Friends Unplugged, just prior to the Grammy’s. Apparently X Factors Stacey Francis and Houston had some harsh words after their performance together onstage. As Houston was leaving she appears dazed and aggressive, yelling at the paparazzi.
